High School Tutoring & Mentoring
Comprehensive, Year-long Course Tutoring || I work with students one-on-one across all or some number of their high school courses (apart from upper level math). These meetings are designed to supplement the instruction in the classroom and provide the supportive scaffolding to help your student prepare, plan, and make the most of their in-class experience. Here, special attention is devoted to particular assignments, from the planning and execution phases through to submission. This often involves reading together for meaning and understanding as well as developing strategies for analyzing and discussing complex texts. While the immediate aim might be success on a particular essay or exam, the overall aim is to help your student develop the skills, confidence, and habits of mind to become independent learners.
Intensive Writing Workshops || Throughout the year, I also offer one-on-one personal writing support for students preparing for college or university. This includes a diagnostic consultation, a customized program of sequenced writing assignments fit to your specific needs, comprehensive written feedback, and a suite of one-to-one video sessions of instruction and discussion. This service also includes unlimited email support.
Enrichment Courses || Every summer, I run a series of fun courses in philosophy and logic for kids. The content and the approach I take is roughly modeled on summer camp courses I have taught for the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). These can be organized for one-on-one or small group instruction. The aim is to expose kids to both rigorous and creative ways of thinking about abstract ideas and puzzles by way of a tour through some of the weirdest thought-experiments and arguments in the history of western philosophy.
